What is Chrome?
Hey there from Pimped Out Cars
| One of the major ways that you can pimp out your car is the addition of Chrome. Chrome has been used for years and years on cars. For many many years the bumpers on cars were made from chrome. But times have change and bumpers are made from plastic and foam. Also the chrome look is still very popular. I don’t think that there is one piece of real chrome on cars any more. What people call Chrome to day is really some shine chrome looking stuff on Plastic. That is the Chrome Grille all the shinny mirrored looking parts in your dashboard. After awhile the age of the vehicle, one of the aging tell tale signs is the peeling chrome.
I am familiar with process of chroming an item. But I don’t know what the cost is and what about doing it myself. As I think about the process, I think that Chroming myself is out of the question. The Chemicals are just too dangerous. About 15 years ago I used to go to a company that Chromed parts, but on a very large scale. The floor was at least about 500,000 square feet. The company Chromed the desks used in high school classrooms. It was an interesting process and used about 15 or 20 massive tanks probably 25 feet long, 8 feet wide and 6 feet deep and winches to dip the chairs in. What do I do about chroming a license plate? Chroming is a form of electroplating. Mostly what I have seen is the re-chroming of a part, such as an old bumper from a car. Electroplating is the process by which a metallic coating is deposited by submerging in into a solution containing a salt of the metal in which a negative charge has been applied. The metal ions in the salt solution are positively charged and are reduced to a metallic substance adhering to the part. Actually the part doesn’t have a coating applied but is chemically bonded to the part. The larger the charge the more material is electroplated. |
