My alternator Failed on a trip across the country
Title: Carburetors Vs Electronic Fuel Injection
Hey there from Pimped Out Cars
| If you have read other posts of mine you will have heard about my 1989 Honda Civic CRX. It was light blue and there were three model, the HF, DX and the SI. Mine was a DX, You can tell a DX, First it does not have the DX written on it. It has two mirrors, the HF has one. The exhuast has one exit from the muffler. the SI has two.
One of the things about a failing alternator is that it, at least in this case is a very slow death. The battery seemed to go dead quite easily and the lights were always Dim. Actually, I am pretty lucky, those cars are little bullet proof tanks, in other words very reliable. I left Dallas and went to Minneapolis for Christmas to stay with my grandmother. When I got to Minneapolis there was a cold snap and the tempurature plummeted to a daily high of 20 below Zero Farenheit. One thing about Hondas I discovered is that the heater is no good when it gets to below zero tempuratures. I would turn on the heat and could never get the car to defrost. At this time the Battery failed. Probably not the battery, most likely the alternator was failing. If you have to change it buy decent quality Jumper cables and buy high quality 20 foot long cables. You will never have to buy another set and you will be happy everytime you use them. Well, the time came to leave town and I went to buffalo WY and visited my cousin for a couple of days and then went Salt Lake City to go Skiing. I ended up staying there for a year and a half. How I made it there is beyond me. My electrical system was acting strange the whole way. I arrived and stayed with some friends and viola my cars alternator gave out about two days later. Now normally I do my own work, but since I was out of town and needed my car back ASAP. I took it to the Honda dealership and they replaced the alternator with a genuine Honda part which has a 1 year warranty. Wouldn’t you know it about 1 year and ten 10 later the Alternator failed again. I went back to the dealership and they would not cover the warranty. So I went to my local auto parts store and paid half the price for a imitation Honda alternator. Installed it and never had a problem again. And the alternator has a lifetime warranty. So my advice to everyone is. Forget about genuine auto parts and use after market parts. They last longer and if you ever have to replace the part it is with a free replacement part. I’ve had to do it. There is nothing more satisfying than walking into the store with a ten year old part and they give you a replacement at no cost. |
