Carburetors Vs Electronic Fuel Injection

Hey there from Pimped Out Cars

I was curious as to the differences between a Carburetor and EFI. Now I am no expert on this stuff, but these are some of my observations.

Both have been around since the beginning of automobiles, but the Carb is a much more simpler device. Obviously it is a mechanical device. If you take a look at my old 1991 chevy Pick up, the EFI was really just a fancy Carburetor in which the fuel was electrically injected into the carburetor. I think probably just to increase sales and to conform to increasing governmental control. Newer carbs do direct injection into the cylinders.
The biggest reason for EFI is to be able to control the fuel air mixture. Therefore you get better combustion of fuel and you get less unburned fuel coming out of the tailpipe. In fact if you pour too much fuel into the engine you will flood the engine.

I have put together a list of reason to have and not to have either. I think the biggest factor on choice is answered by one question. How much money to you have in your pocket?

There is a saying I heard once. “If you have a problem that can be solved by money. You don’t have a problem. You have a money problem.”

My first thought was that simpler is better. But that depends on how you look at the issue. Is it simpler to build? Is it simpler to maintain? Is it simpler to fix?

Regarding carburetors: It is simpler because it is mechanical. It is simpler to install. It is simpler to tweak and tune. The tools used to work with a carb are simpler. Namely, the screwdriver.

As for the EFI: If you have money and computers, It is simpler to tweak and tune.

If you have money go for the EFI. You will get more horsepower and torque. Better fuel mileage. Better longevity of the engine. In my opinion, as your engine ages you will start to have electrical issues and that cost money to fix.

If you have no money. go for the Carburetor. You can get horsepower and torque cheaper and all you need is a screwdriver. You can always go bigger. Bigger carb, Bigger engine and heads. You can drive a nail in faster with a bigger hammer.

I personally am old school and prefer the carb. I think it will always run.
